Excerpts from an interactive panel discussion at Oracle OpenWorld,London on 'Business and IT challenges faced by today's SMEs' led by respected industry analyst Nigel Montgomery of AMR Research

We are all in a global market now," Montgomery told the audience, pointing out that the global marketplace presents as many challenges as it does opportunities. SMEs are pressured to reduce prices, cut costs and comply with an every increasing array of industry regulations, he said.

The panel of three end-users and three IT consultancies agreed with Montgomery's assessment. Among others the panel had Danny Martorana from computing equipment distributor Hugh Symons Group. He recounted his experience on how Inatech helped Hugh Symons Group add 30% to their profit base

The experiences of the panelists bore out an observation that AMR's Montgomery made about IT spending starting to rise among European and Middle Eastern SMEs, as the economies start to look more robust once more. "Now is a good time to try and grow across the region," he said.

The custom application developed using Oracle's Mobile Profiling, was deployed to work on PDAs and Laptop. Hugh Symons needed to reach a wider customer base while trimming the cost of sale and call center resources. The company decided to launch a commercial presence on Internet through an e-shop. It partnered with Inatech Solutions to build and deploy the e-shop using Oracle iStore. Inatech has pioneered Oracle iStore deployment in UK. In the words of HSG's chief Technology officer, Danny Martorana, "Oracle iStore will cut our call center resources by 20%. It is a key enabler of our goal of improving customer service with an online commercial presence and ultimately reduces cost of sale by 25 percent."
